In a public notice,  the Authority directed the 107 listed facilities to submit critical environmental compliance documents within seven days or risk closure and legal sanctions.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has launched a national crackdown on noise pollution, issuing a stern warning to dozens of bars, lounges, clubs, and restaurants across the country.

In a public notice,  the Authority directed the 107 listed facilities to submit critical environmental compliance documents within seven days or risk closure and legal sanctions.

According to the Authority, complaints from the public about excessive noise have increased sharply in recent months, with many urban neighborhoods reporting sleepless nights and disrupted community life.

“NEMA has been receiving complaints regarding noise pollution from clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants across the country. Several facilities have already been served with Environmental Restoration Orders, but the majority have failed to comply,” the notice read.

The directive is rooted in the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), CAP 387, which empowers NEMA to enforce environmental standards across Kenya.

Under Section 101, NEMA developed the Environment Management and Coordination (Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution) (Control) Regulations, 2009, to curb unnecessary noise and vibrations.

The targeted facilities have been asked to provide five key documents: a certificate of incorporation (CR-12), a valid Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license, the latest Environmental Audit (EA), proof of noise pollution control measures, and reasons why legal action or closure should not be taken against them.

The list of establishments spans major towns and cities, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kakamega, Rongai, and Busia.

Among the popular Nairobi hotspots cited are Quiver Lounge (Kilimani and Eastlands branches), Club 1824 in Lang’ata, Backyard Lounge in Embakasi, Illusion Lounge in Syokimau, and Kettle House along Muthangari Drive.

Other well-known venues include Ibiza Club in Rongai, Clarence Hotel in Westlands, Tulia House in Nyali, and Alaska Lounge in Syokimau.

Club Image and Sumo Lounge in Uthiru, Noir Gallery in Kilimani, Eagles Bar in Kakamega, and Winnam Bar in Busia all appear on the list.
