Ramadan Sobhi, Pyramids FC winger & former Al Ahly player, is set to appear in criminal court on charges of academic fraud, a report from the North African country says.
Sobhi, who is well-travelled and has featured for a myriad of clubs such as Al Ahly, Huddersfield Town in England and others, is in trouble for allegedly paying someone to impersonate him and take on an academic examination on his behalf.
The investigation began after authorities caught the young man sitting an exam on Sobhi’s behalf at tourism and hotel institute. The individual admitted he received money from Sobhi to impersonate him during the tests. The case led to weeks of questioning before Sobhi was released on bail of 100,000 Egyptian pounds or Sh268,000, FootAfrica reports.
In August, prosecutors ordered urgent investigations. On Monday, they confirmed Sobhi’s referral to trial, meaning the 31-year-old could soon face a court session that may impact his sporting future.
Sobhi's camp has consistently denied involvement in the saga, stressing he has no link to the person caught. Pyramids FC have also issued a statement backing their player, noting that the club hasn't received any prior official notice of sanction.
Sobhi has yet to feature this season for Pyramids, having suffered a hamstring injury in July. He has so far missed all their league matches and has been expected back in training any time now following a setback in recovery two weeks ago.
