Kiprono Chemitei of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has been formally cleared to contest the Baringo Senatorial by-election slated for November 27, 2025. Chemitei submitted his nomination papers on Thursday in Kabarnet, joined by several UDA lawmakers, following his victory in the party primaries.
In the UDA nomination, Chemitei emerged top with 48,791 votes, surpassing Tobole Kipsang Kibor Wycliffe, who received 30,897 votes, and Daniel Kiptoo Korir, who trailed with 23,613 votes.
His approval by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) now allows him to officially begin preparations for the by-election campaign.
The IEBC is finalizing the registration of candidates in 24 constituencies scheduled for by-elections on November 27. The verification process ensures all nominees meet legal requirements for elective positions.
Once completed by the Returning Officers, candidates can commence campaigns, which will run daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and conclude on November 24, 48 hours before polling.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon Edung said the commission is now fully equipped to conduct the by-elections after receiving the necessary resources from the National Treasury.
“We would like to assure the country and citizens that all preparations are in top gear, and the resources we needed to conduct successful by-elections are now available to us,” he said, addressing concerns over earlier funding shortfalls.
Edung explained that the previous constraints were resolved through productive discussions with Treasury officials.
“Where there were shortages, we have had candid and fruitful discussions with our national treasury, who have since then unlocked that, and therefore there is no reason whatsoever why we should not have by-elections as planned,” he said.
The IEBC chair further highlighted ongoing engagement with political stakeholders to ensure transparency and readiness.
Consultations with political parties through the Political Parties Liaison Committee, alongside the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, have focused on preparation not only for the upcoming by-elections but also for the 2027 general elections.
“We have discussed several issues on our levels of preparedness, not only for the 2027 general elections but also for the by-elections and voter registration exercises,” Edung said.
