A 55-year-old man suspected of fatally attacking a General Service Unit (GSU) officer near State House in Nairobi has been remanded in police custody for 14 days as investigations continue.
Kimunye Musyimi appeared in court on Tuesday, where detectives requested extra time to complete their inquiry.
According to police, the suspect travelled from Makueni on Sunday night and allegedly carried out the attack the next morning.
In videos seen by Radio Generation, Musyimi, who appeared in court, seemed to be limping and needed assistance from officers to get medical attention.
He allegedly attacked the police officer at around 8:10 a.m. on Monday near State House Gate D along Dennis Pritt Road.
Officers report that the suspect, armed with a bow and arrows, ignored repeated orders to surrender before shooting an arrow that struck Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka in the ribs.
Constable Mattanka was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital but later died from his injuries. His body was taken to the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
The National Police Service described the incident as a “heinous act” and commended the officers for their quick response, which prevented further harm.
“An investigation is ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack,” the statement said.
The Service extended its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Constable Mattanka, noting that he paid the ultimate price while serving the country.
“The officer’s next of kin have been notified, and the Service stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said.
