The death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga on Wednesday has drawn an outpouring of condolences from global leaders, who remembered him as a dedicated statesman, a champion of democracy, and a unifying figure whose influence extended beyond Kenya’s borders.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema paid tribute to Raila, expressing sympathy to President William Ruto, the Odinga family, and all Kenyans. In his message, Hichilema described the late leader as “a towering advocate for democracy, a fearless voice for justice, and an unwavering servant of the people.”
He highlighted Raila’s lifelong devotion to democratic reforms and inclusive leadership, noting that his example inspired generations across Africa.
“In honoring his memory, we celebrate his many contributions, from advancing constitutional reforms and championing inclusive governance to fostering dialogue in times of crisis,” Hichilema said. “His legacy will endure.” He also prayed for all Kenyans grieving the loss of a national icon, wishing Raila eternal peace.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, calling Raila “a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.” Modi reflected on their longstanding friendship that began during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, emphasizing Raila’s respect for India, its people, and culture, and acknowledging his role in strengthening relations between the two countries.
“He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom,” Modi said, adding that Raila admired traditional Indian medicine such as Ayurveda, which had positively benefited his daughter’s health. He extended condolences to the Odinga family, friends, and the Kenyan people, underlining that Raila’s passing was a loss not only for Kenya but also for the wider international community that valued his leadership. “His legacy of courage, justice, and unity will continue to inspire us all,” Modi said.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan also joined the tributes, describing Raila as “a distinguished leader, a Pan-Africanist, a peace-loving statesman, and a mediator whose influence extended beyond Kenya to the entire African continent.”
She said his loss was shared beyond Kenya, conveying condolences to President Ruto, Mama Ida Odinga, and the Kenyan people, and praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
