The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has urged its members to remain united following the death of party leader and former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a statement on Wednesday, ODM Secretary-General Senator Edwin Sifuna confirmed that the party had received the dreadful news of Odinga’s passing in India, where he had been undergoing treatment.

“The party and the entire country are in deep shock following the news,” Sifuna said.

“On behalf of the party, I send my condolences to family, friends, party members, and the millions across the world to whom the Rt Hon Odinga was a beacon of hope in a world filled with despair.”

Sifuna hailed Odinga as a towering figure in Kenya’s democratic journey, noting that for more than three decades, he nurtured political leadership and inspired the growth of democratic ideals across the country.

“The Rt Hon Odinga has been the leading political figure in this nation for at least three decades, at whose feet democratic ideals have been nurtured and political careers grown,” he said.

He described Odinga as a true giant of our nation and a darling in the hearts of Kenyans for his steadfast fight for justice, equality, and freedom.

As the party and the country come to terms with the loss, Sifuna called on ODM members to rally together in solidarity and uphold the values Odinga championed throughout his life.

“I urge all party members to observe the tenets of unity and rally together as we reflect on the life and times of our leader — a man who has been a mentor and father to all, hence the moniker ‘Baba,’” Sifuna said.

He assured members and supporters that ODM would provide regular updates on funeral arrangements in collaboration with the Odinga family.

The statement concluded with a tribute to the late opposition leader:

“May Baba’s soul find deserving rest in heaven.”
