The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has pledged to uphold former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s vision of integrity, impartiality, and transparency in every election.

In a statement, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said Raila’s sacrifices helped strengthen the institutions that safeguard the will of the Kenyan people.

“In his honour, the IEBC rededicates itself to his vision, to defend integrity, impartiality, and transparency in every election, and to ensure that the voice of every Kenyan remains sacred and supreme,” Ethekon said.

He added that the late ODM leader’s courage and commitment to democratic reform had left an enduring legacy.

“The Rt. Hon. Odinga’s indomitable spirit guided our nation through its most defining moments — from the struggle for multiparty democracy to the birth of the 2010 Constitution, and the relentless quest for credible, transparent, and people-centered elections.”

The Commission expressed deep sorrow over Raila’s death, describing him as a patriot of unmatched devotion and a steadfast architect of Kenya’s democracy.

It also acknowledged that his sacrifices had strengthened the institutions that protect the will of the Kenyan people.

The electoral body further stated that Raila’s life was etched in Kenya’s democratic foundations and that his efforts were reflected in every reform, freedom, and ballot cast since the return of multiparty democracy.

“Go well, great son of Kenya. Your dream for a just, democratic, and united nation will forever inspire our path,” the Commission concluded.

Raila died in India after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment. His body arrived in the country on Thursday morning and has been lying in state.

The government on Wednesday announced that the former Prime Minister will be accorded a state funeral.

President William Ruto also declared a seven-day period of national mourning, during which all official engagements are suspended and flags across government offices, State House, military installations, and diplomatic missions abroad will fly at half-mast.
