Kenya’s U20 women’s national team, the Rising Starlets, remain firmly in the race for a FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup slot after battling to a hard-fought 1–1 draw away to Ethiopia in Addis Ababa on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
The spirited display not only earned them a crucial away goal but also boosted morale ahead of the decisive second leg scheduled for Sunday, September 28, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.
The first leg in Ethiopia was more than just a test on the pitch; it was also a moment of national pride as Kenyans living in Ethiopia turned out in numbers to rally behind the young side.
Leading the support was Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Amb. George Orina, who, alongside members of the Kenyan diaspora, graced the stands to cheer on the Starlets.
Their presence lifted the team, with many players acknowledging the motivation that came from seeing their compatriots waving flags and chanting their names far from home.
Head coach Jackline Juma praised her side’s resilience, especially given the absence of a few players due to exams and documentation issues.
“So far, so good. The group we have is focused and mentally ready. An away goal matters a lot, and we’ll try to get it, but our defending must be superb,” she said before the first leg.
The tactical approach paid off, with the Starlets striking an important balance between discipline at the back and sharpness in attack.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed also lauded the team for their commitment and determination, describing the draw as a “crucial point away from home.”
He urged fans to fill the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi for the return leg, confident that the home atmosphere will push the team over the line.
All eyes are now on the second leg in Nairobi, where the Rising Starlets will look to make home advantage count. With the tie finely poised at 1–1, a win of any margin will secure their passage to the next round of the World Cup qualifiers.
