In Summary

The announcement follows a high-level meeting in Nairobi between Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, and Invention Studios President Nicholas Weinstock.

The Kenyan government has expressed strong support for the planned expansion of Los Angeles-based Invention Studios, a move seen as a major boost to the country's creative industry.

The announcement follows a high-level meeting in Nairobi between Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, and Invention Studios President Nicholas Weinstock.

The talks were held ahead of the upcoming International Creative Economy Conference slated for June 5.

This growing partnership between Invention Studios and the Ministry has already borne fruit, with five films successfully produced in Kenya.

The development reflects increasing international engagement in Kenya’s flourishing creative scene.

CS Mvurya reiterated the government's dedication to harnessing the creative economy’s full potential—an essential component of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

He emphasized ongoing policy overhauls, infrastructure investments, and financial incentives designed to double the sector’s GDP contribution from the current 5% to 10% by the close of 2025.

“This collaboration underscores the creative industry’s potential to fuel economic growth, generate employment, and empower young people,” said CS Mvurya.

“We are intentionally building a supportive environment through targeted policies and strategic investments to help creatives flourish locally while reaching global markets.”

Invention Studios President Weinstock commended Kenya’s rich storytelling landscape and highlighted the need for mentorship, skill development, and global opportunities to elevate local talent.

As part of its broader strategy, the government is building state-of-the-art film studios under the Affordable Housing Program and introducing incentives like reduced production costs, tax breaks, and simplified visa processes to draw more international filmmakers to Kenya.

The upcoming International Creative Economy Conference is expected to convene creatives, investors, policymakers, and development partners including a senior delegation from the United States to explore avenues for increased investment, collaboration, and innovation in Kenya’s creative industry.
