No panic, Nyayo to be ready for CHAN, government says

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya says that the Nyayo National Stadium renovations are almost complete and that he expects Kenyans to protect the assets at all costs, with the government having spent billions of shillings to get it up to scratch ahead of the upcoming African Nations Championships CHAN to be held from August 2, 2025.
Having promised earlier to hand over all facilities intended for use during CHAN by June 26, Mvurya, speaking Tuesday in Nairobi, stated that all is well despite the handover delay.
CS Mvurya revealed that to his astute knowledge, only the perimeter wall at the stadium remains under construction after it was demolished and redesigned to meet CAF security standards.
"The field is ready. We will hand over the Stadium by the end of the week," he said.
With the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani now complete and ready to host the tournament, Mvurya is beyond excited, yet cautious, going by past incidences of hooliganism that have destroyed infrastructure.
“These stadiums have cost us an arm and a leg. If we allow vandalism, we’ll be forced to allocate more funds for renovations, and that is not sustainable. These are public assets, and every Kenyan must take responsibility to protect them,” he said.
The Ulinzi Sports Complex, Kenya Police Sacco Stadium, Kasarani Annex, and Kirigiti Stadium have also undergone major repairs in preparation for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from August 2 to August 30, 2025.
Kenya is in group A of the competition and will face stiff opposition from Angola, Morocco, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
