Tuju resigns from Jubilee, cites inability to contribute further

In a resignation letter to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Tuju expressed hope to collaborate with him in the future but stated that currently, he cannot contribute further to Jubilee
Raphael Tuju has stepped down from Jubilee Party, saying he no longer has a meaningful role to play in the party.
In a resignation letter to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Tuju expressed hope to collaborate with him in the future but stated that currently, he cannot contribute further to Jubilee.
“I still look forward to working with you in future. However, at the present time, I see no more value that I can add to the Jubilee Party. I therefore tender my resignation. Please accept my best wishes for your well-being and for the Party,” Tuju wrote.
Having been out of the country for six weeks, Tuju admitted he is not fully updated on recent party developments.
He thanked Uhuru Kenyatta for the opportunity to serve as Secretary General from 2016 to 2022 and described his appointment as a bold political move, noting that as a Luo, he joined a party mainly anchored in the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities.
His aim, he said, was to strengthen Jubilee as a national party that goes beyond ethnic lines.
Reflecting on past challenges, Tuju said both he and Kenyatta faced political resistance for being seen as insufficiently loyal to their ethnic bases.
He noted that the 2018 handshake between Kenyatta and Raila Odinga created tension within Jubilee and affected his relationship with William Ruto, despite efforts to smooth over differences.
Tuju praised the handshake, saying it prevented political instability, and observed that Ruto later took a similar approach following the Gen Z protests in 2024.
“I remained loyal to you as President, Party Leader, and cabinet member,” Tuju stated.
He reiterated his belief that Kenyans should unite to fight poverty and unemployment rather than divide along tribal lines.
Tuju concluded by wishing Jubilee well and acknowledging his long political collaboration with Uhuru Kenyatta.
Before leaving Jubilee, he had taken on the role of Executive Director at the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance, with Raila Odinga as leader and Uhuru as chairperson.
