Kenya’s election to the United Nations Tourism Executive Council has been celebrated as a win not only for the country but for Africa’s broader push for stronger global representation in tourism governance.

The announcement was made during the 68th UN Tourism Commission for Africa meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria, where tourism ministers and stakeholders came together to chart a path for the continent’s tourism sector.

The event, hosted with UN Tourism (formerly UNWTO), focused on boosting Africa’s tourism through education, innovation and regional partnerships. Kenya’s successful campaign was backed by a majority of African member states, reinforcing the country's trusted reputation in sustainable tourism and conservation.

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano applauded the decision, saying: “This win is not just for Kenya; it is for Africa.

It shows that our collective voice matters in global tourism governance. We are committed to championing policies that promote sustainable tourism, community empowerment, and economic resilience.”

The four-year term on the Executive Council allows Kenya to take part in shaping tourism policies, addressing global challenges, and promoting inclusive practices.

It also comes as Kenya continues to lead in other UN Tourism roles—chairing the Tourism and Competitiveness Committee, and serving on the Programme and Budget and the Tourism and Sustainability Committees.

During the Abuja forum, UN Tourism Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili highlighted Africa’s tourism potential, praising its cultural diversity, creativity, and youthful energy.

He urged investment in people, technology, and bold solutions to create a more inclusive and resilient tourism industry. Delegates echoed these calls, with discussions on tourism education, youth and women empowerment, digital growth, and intra-African travel.

Kenya’s new role builds on its past leadership as Vice Chair of the Regional Commission for Africa and signals a renewed commitment to shaping tourism’s future at both regional and global levels.
