A tragic accident near Bilto Banta along the Garissa–Nairobi highway has left two people dead and several others injured after a saloon car rolled on Saturday evening.

Bruce Livoywa, the Head of the Accident and Emergency Department at Garissa County Referral Hospital (GCRH), confirmed that they received four casualties from the scene of the accident.

“We received the call and dispatched our team immediately. The injured have been treated, but sadly, two lives were pronounced dead after the probox vehicle overturned,” he told Radio Generation.

Livoywa said one patient is currently undergoing treatment for a dislocated shoulder, while another with soft tissue injuries was treated, stabilized, and subsequently discharged.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the vehicle lost control, leading to the fatal crash.

"It happened so fast," said Ahmed Yusuf, a resident who witnessed the incident.

“The car was speeding, and then it just flipped. It was heartbreaking to see.”

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, with police yet to release an official statement.

The Nairobi-Garissa highway has long been a concern for locals due to its challenging conditions.

"This road claims too many lives," said Fatuma Ali, a resident of Garissa.

"We need improved road conditions and better safety measures to protect our people," she said resentfully.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a six-month nationwide road safety campaign aimed at reducing accidents and promoting responsible driving practices.

The initiative includes public awareness programs, enhanced enforcement measures, stakeholder collaboration, and the use of advanced technology for monitoring and compliance.

A Police source who is not authorized to speak to the media confirmed that the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
