Families of those killed during last year’s anti-Finance Bill demonstrations are planning peaceful marches in Nairobi and other parts of the country next Wednesday to mark the first anniversary of their loved ones’ deaths.

Led mainly by mothers of the victims, the procession is aimed at honouring the deceased while renewing calls for justice and accountability.

The families have stressed that the marches will be peaceful and have appealed to the police to offer protection during the commemoration.

Speaking ahead of the planned event, advocate Njanja Maina urged authorities and political figures to exercise restraint and not take advantage of the moment.

“This day belongs to the families who buried their children not to political opportunists. We have seen how protests are infiltrated by paid goons. We will not allow our pain to be weaponized. Respect our grief, walk with us, or stay away,” Maina said.

She also addressed the National Police Service, stating, “This is a lawful and peaceful procession. We expect professionalism, cooperation, and discipline from the police.”

Members of Gen Z are expected to join the march, using the day to push for justice, reforms, and improved governance, in what they consider a turning point in Kenya’s civic engagement.

Social media posters circulating ahead of the day are encouraging participants, especially the youth, to carry Kenyan flags and water bottles—symbols of peaceful resistance and unity.

Nairobi Police Commander George Seda confirmed that law enforcement had been notified by the organisers and assured that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure public safety throughout the day.

“We are fully aware of the plans and will provide adequate security to safeguard everyone, both participants and non-participants,” Seda said during a Wednesday press briefing.

He noted that the right to peaceful protest would be respected but warned against any acts that could lead to chaos, citing previous cases of property damage in Nairobi’s central business district.

“Let’s stick to peaceful conduct. Demonstrations should not infringe on the rights of others or disrupt businesses,” Seda urged.
