In its weekly forecast, the department said residents in the Central Highlands, Western and parts of the North-western region should expect intensified rainfall

The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned that several regions should brace for increased rainfall and isolated storms between Tuesday, August 12, and Monday, August 18, 2025.

In its weekly forecast, the department said residents in the Central Highlands, Western and parts of the North-western region should expect intensified rainfall, with some areas likely to experience localised thunderstorms.

“Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions may occur over parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands and the Rift Valley,” the department stated.

The forecast also indicates notable temperature shifts across the country. Daytime highs above 30°C are expected in the North-eastern and North-western regions, while night-time temperatures could drop below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley and areas near Mt Kilimanjaro.

Strong southerly to south-easterly winds, exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s), are also predicted. The department said these winds will mainly affect the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, and parts of the South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern and North-western regions.

Counties in Western Kenya and the Rift Valley, including Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru and Kericho, are likely to receive afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with occasional morning and evening rain. Day temperatures will range between 28°C and 30°C, with night temperatures falling to about 11°C.

In the North-western region covering Turkana and Samburu, sunny conditions will dominate the first half of the week, followed by isolated afternoon storms and night showers toward the weekend. Maximum daytime temperatures will reach 35°C, while night temperatures may fall to 8°C in some parts.

Central Kenya and Nairobi will likely see cloudy mornings, sunny intervals, and afternoon showers in some areas. Saturday could bring more widespread rainfall. Minimum temperatures may drop to 8°C, especially midweek, while maximums will average between 26°C and 27°C.

The North-eastern region, including Mandera, Garissa and Wajir, is expected to remain dry and sunny for most of the week, with possible light showers by Saturday night. Daytime highs will range from 33°C to 35°C.

In the South-eastern Lowlands, residents can expect cloudy mornings and sunny afternoons, with no significant rainfall forecast. Maximum temperatures will range from 28°C to 30°C, and cooler nights could reach lows of 9°C by the weekend.

The Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu will experience warm conditions, with sunny days and occasional light showers, particularly on Friday and Saturday. Daytime temperatures will stay between 28°C and 30°C, while humid nights will range from 19°C to 21°C.

The department urged the public to remain alert, especially in areas prone to flooding and strong winds, and to follow official forecasts and advisories. Mariners and coastal communities were also advised to be cautious due to the risk of rough seas.
