Kenyans have been advised to brace for continued rains and colder nights across several parts of the country, according to the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

In its weather outlook released on Monday, the Met Department indicated that rainfall will persist in various regions, particularly the Central Highlands including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and parts of North-western Kenya. Some areas may experience isolated storms, with rainfall varying in intensity from light showers to heavy downpours.

The department further noted that cold and cloudy conditions are expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and certain parts of the Rift Valley. The chilly weather is likely to cause a drop in night-time temperatures, especially in areas such as the Central Highlands, the Central Rift Valley, and regions surrounding Mt Kilimanjaro, where temperatures may fall below 10 degrees Celsius.

"Residents in these regions have been urged to prepare for chilly nights," the statement read.

On the other hand, parts of North-eastern and North-western Kenya will remain dry and hot during the day. These areas are forecast to experience daytime temperatures soaring past 30 degrees Celsius, with minimal rainfall expected.

In addition to the temperature changes, the weather agency has issued an alert on strong winds expected to sweep across several parts of the country. According to the Met Department, "Southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 meters per second) are expected to affect several regions, including the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, South-eastern lowlands, and parts of North-eastern and North-western Kenya."

To cope with the cold weather, the public is advised to keep their homes warm by using safe heating methods and ensuring proper ventilation to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Wearing warm clothing such as sweaters, trench coats, gloves, scarfs, socks, and fleece or woolen garments is also encouraged. At night, the use of extra duvets or blankets is recommended.

"Additionally, eating well can keep you warm. Remember to take warm drinks. Further, you should stay active," the statement advised.

With the variation in weather patterns across the country, residents are urged to stay informed and take appropriate measures for their health and safety.
