National Library appeals for funds to restore key libraries, expand services

KNLS urgently needs more than Sh112 million to repair three of its main branches, Maktaba Kuu, Buruburu, and Nakuru.
The Kenya National Library Service (KNLS) has revealed a wide-reaching plan to improve its services, even as it struggles with ageing buildings, limited staff, and a tight budget.
Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture, KNLS CEO Dr. Charles Nzivo said the agency urgently needs more than Sh112 million to repair three of its main branches, Maktaba Kuu, Buruburu, and Nakuru, which he described as being in a serious state of decay.
"Maktaba Kuu, which serves as our headquarters, along with our Buruburu and Nakuru branches, are (sic) in a severe state of decay," said Dr. Nzivo.
The Buruburu and Nakuru branches have not had repairs for over ten years.
Dr. Nzivo said these buildings are central to public library services in Kenya and need urgent attention.
He made the appeal during a session led by Kabete MP Wamacukuru Githua.
The CEO also outlined future projects that include setting up satellite centres in Busia, Kirinyaga, Homa Bay, Kitale, Kajiado, Mandera, and Wajir to bring library services closer to communities.
In addition to expanding its reach, KNLS plans to create a Conservation and Preservation Laboratory and a Kenya School of Professionals to improve how it handles its services and trains staff.
Dr. Nzivo said KNLS is facing serious staffing gaps.
The agency currently operates with 165 workers, well below its required number of 317.
He called on the Committee to support a budget that would allow the agency to hire more staff and meet its goals.
Committee Chair Wamacukuru recognised the value of KNLS in the country’s education system and said the team would support the agency’s funding request.
"The Committee will fulfill its mandate by ensuring that the necessary funds are allocated to KNLS through the National Treasury," said Wamacukuru.
Busia County MP Catherine Omanyo said KNLS should also think of ways to use its revenue streams to support future projects.
"From your presentation, it’s clear that KNLS has revenue streams. Consider expanding these to fund additional income-generating ventures," she advised.
