Residents had earlier raised alarm about suspicious movements on the land, prompting swift action from the EACC’s Lower Coast Regional Office.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has stepped in to protect the historic Kongo Mosque in Kwale County from attempted land grabbing, in what is now one of the boldest efforts to shield Kenya’s cultural landmarks from encroachment.

On Friday, EACC Chief Executive Abdi Mohamud led a team of senior officials to the site of the mosque, which has stood for over 700 years, assuring residents that the Commission would not allow any interference with the ancient structure.

"We are here to witness and see the mosque that has been grabbed," the CEO said.

He explained that In April, the Commision received information that individuals had encroached on the land where the mosque standing here long before Fort Jesus has been for centuries.

The EACC launched investigations soon after receiving the tip-off, and in May, obtained court orders barring any parties from interfering with the property.

The Commission also wrote to the Ministry of Lands, instructing it to halt any ongoing or future transactions involving the disputed land.

"We assure the public that the property will remain intact," Mohamud said.

The CEO was accompanied by Director David Too and EACC Deputy Regional Manager Fatuma Saad during the visit, which follows growing public concern over illegal activities around the site.

Residents had earlier raised alarm about suspicious movements on the land, prompting swift action from the EACC’s Lower Coast Regional Office.

Kongo Mosque, celebrated for its coral stone walls and unique Swahili architectural style, has been gazetted as a national monument twice, in 1927 and again in 1983 due to its rich historical and spiritual significance.

The attempted grabbing has reignited debate over the growing threat to Kenya’s public and heritage lands, as unscrupulous individuals increasingly target protected sites for private gain.

The EACC has vowed to intensify its efforts in safeguarding historical landmarks and promised to remain vigilant across the country.
