The Green Park Underpass, situated at the junction of Uhuru Highway and Haile Selassie Avenue, is approaching completion.

This project aims to enhance pedestrian safety and streamline traffic flow into Nairobi’s central business district.

Deputy Chief of Staff for Performance and Delivery Management, Eliud Owalo, made the remarks during a site visit accompanied by engineers and officials from the Government Delivery Unit.

He noted that the project is 88 percent complete and will offer a safe passageway beneath the busy Uhuru Highway.

Owalo further pointed out that the underpass will directly link Uhuru Park, the Nairobi Railway Station, and Haile Selassie Avenue to the city centre, eliminating the need for pedestrians to cross hectic traffic lanes.

"This Green Park underpass goes beyond typical infrastructure—it represents a bold step toward transforming Nairobi’s urban experience," said Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff for Performance and Delivery Management.

"We’re not just building a passage; we’re crafting a new way of moving through the city."

The Sh2 billion development will feature illuminated walkways, retail spaces, and CCTV surveillance, taking cues from modern multi-functional pedestrian tunnels in global cities.

By channeling foot traffic underground, the underpass is expected to ease congestion, improve road safety, and streamline vehicle movement at the heavily trafficked Haile Selassie-Uhuru Highway intersection.

The project is a national government effort led by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in partnership with the China Road and Bridge Corporation.

Its design draws inspiration from internationally acclaimed urban infrastructure like London’s iconic pedestrian underpasses, known for their secure, efficient, and commuter-friendly layouts.
