In Summary

This state-of-the-art market will provide a clean, organized, and dignified environment for over 2,000 fishmongers from the county and surrounding areas to handle and trade fish.

The modern fish market in Koginga, Homa Bay County, is now complete and ready for use.

President William Ruto is scheduled to officially hand over the Sh345 million facility to local fish traders on Friday afternoon, May 30, ahead of the planned timeline.

This state-of-the-art market will provide a clean, organized, and dignified environment for over 2,000 fishmongers from the county and surrounding areas to handle and trade fish.

Equipped with cold storage facilities, the market aims to reduce fish spoilage and support value addition, ultimately boosting traders’ incomes and increasing both county and national revenues.

Reflecting on this achievement, Lilian Kieni, Director of Urban Development at the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, stated, "The new fish market features a dedicated fish processing area that will be instrumental in leveraging maritime resources for economic empowerment.

It offers fish traders who previously operated in makeshift structures without proper storage for their perishable goods a dignified and functional space to conduct their business.”

We want to reassure all traders, especially mama samaki and other small vendors, that we are committed to ensuring they have access to clean, well-serviced trading spaces for their daily activities.

The modern market offers hygienic trading areas, retail stalls, and a food court. It also features fish processing and storage facilities, including cold and dry rooms, as well as dedicated gutting and scaling zones.

Fishermen will benefit from a mooring deck and fish landing shed, while processed fish can be stored in designated stores.

The market includes washrooms, kitchens, and proper sanitation systems, supported by a high-level water tower and an underground water tank to guarantee a reliable water supply.

Adequate lighting ensures safety for the market and surrounding areas, and an ICT hub will support digital operations and financial recordkeeping.

Additionally, mother-and-child facilities and ramps designed for persons with disabilities make the space inclusive.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to formalize informal trade and promote inclusive economic growth by providing dignified, well-equipped workspaces across the country.
