A major traffic jam has developed along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway between Emali and Masimba after three trailers collided on a railway bridge near the Jet Inn area, killing one person and seriously injuring another.

The crash, which happened early Friday, completely blocked the road in both directions and caused a heavy snarl-up on the busy highway.

The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the incident and urged motorists to remain calm, observe lane discipline, and use alternative routes to ease congestion and improve safety.

"We are working with relevant agencies to restore normal traffic flow. Additional police officers have been deployed to the area and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules," nNPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said.

Emergency response teams and traffic police were on-site, managing the situation and working to clear the wreckage.

Cleanup operations were still underway at the time of reporting.

To ease the gridlock, the NPS advised Mombasa-bound vehicles to use the Machakos–Wote–Makindu route, while those heading to Nairobi should take the Makindu–Wote–Machakos route.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing road safety and maintaining law and order.

"We urge motorists to exercise patience and maintain lane discipline, consider alternative routes to ease congestion and enhance safety," the police added.
