Police granted access to MP Koimburi’s medical records in torture probe

Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Robin Ondieki directed The Karen Hospital and Plainsview Hospital in Ruiru to release the MP’s records covering the period between May 26 and May 29, 2025.
A Nairobi court has allowed police to access the medical records of Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi from two hospitals following claims he was abducted and tortured.
Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Robin Ondieki directed The Karen Hospital and Plainsview Hospital in Ruiru to release the MP’s records covering the period between May 26 and May 29, 2025.
The court issued a warrant enabling police to inspect, obtain, and take certified copies of the health documents as part of ongoing investigations.
"A warrant do hereby issue to investigate The Karen Hospital-Nairobi patient records domiciled at The Karen Hospital Nairobi Branch and Plainsview Hospital patient records domiciled at Plainsview Hospital Ruiru Branch relating to Hon. George Koimburi, the MP for Juja Constituency to enable IP Nicholas Njoroge, an Investigator attached to DCI Operations Support Unit, to have access, inspect/ investigate, obtain information and demand to be supplied with and carry away as exhibits certified copies of all the health records for the period between 26th May, 2025 and 29th May, 2025," read the court order in part.
Police made the application after failing to access Koimburi while he was admitted at The Karen Hospital, and also being denied access to his medical files at both facilities.
According to the police, the incident has caused public anxiety, especially in a period marked by concerns over abductions.
Investigators say the matter is of public interest and could have far-reaching implications for security in the country.
"The probe will be important and indeed not only to the politicians but to every citizen of this country to know if indeed the abductions are handled by the state agencies or other forces in the dark, and especially at this time of anxieties," the police told the court.
The magistrate further ordered hospital executives to nominate authorized persons to issue a certificate of production of electronic evidence under the Evidence Act for records generated electronically.
Inspector Nicholas Njoroge told the court that the matter was reported at Mugutha Police Station on May 25, 2025, at 4 pm by one Peter Kiratu Mbari.
He stated that Koimburi was taken by unknown men in blue masks shortly after attending a church service and driven away in a Subaru Forester.
Amateur videos showing the MP being bundled into a vehicle later went viral, triggering alarm among the public, his political allies, and family.
The following morning, Koimburi was reportedly found in pain in a coffee plantation in Juja and taken to Plainsview Hospital for first aid, then transferred to The Karen Hospital for further treatment.
Police said Koimburi’s condition and the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction continue to fuel public debate and may have wider security implications.
"It is necessary that the order is issued to enable us receive health documents and other records relating to the treatment of the Hon. George Koimburi held at The Karen Hospital and Plainsview Hospital," said Njoroge.
This latest development follows the release of four suspects by Milimani Law Courts, who were arrested in connection with the alleged staged abduction.
The suspects, Grace Nduta Wairimu (MCA for Kanyenya-ini Ward), Peter Kiratu Mbari, David Macharia Gatana, and Cyrus Muhia, were each released on a cash bail of Sh300,000 or bond of Sh1 million.
As part of their bail conditions, the court barred the suspects from contacting witnesses and required them to report to investigators weekly or as summoned.
Magistrate Carolyne Mugo warned that failure to comply with these terms could lead to cancellation of their bail.
The suspects were arrested following claims they conspired to stage the abduction with intent to commit murder, contrary to Section 258 of the Penal Code.
Police had sought to detain them for 15 more days to allow for further investigation and direction from the Director of Public Prosecutions. The case will be mentioned on June 5, 2025.
