Governor Wanga: ‘Devolution has brought blessings to Homa Bay’

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has hailed the county’s role as host of the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations, describing it as a significant milestone in Kenya’s devolution process.

"This is the first occasion we are hosting the national celebration. The people of Homa Bay, who have previously only seen this event on TV, are now able to participate in it directly," she remarked.

In her speech at the inauguration of the new Homa Bay Stadium, Governor Wanga praised the national government’s commitment to developing the region.

She highlighted key projects such as the 12,000-seat stadium, the ongoing dual carriageway connecting Homa Bay to major towns, the expansion of Kabunde Airstrip, and improvements to important roads within Homa Bay Town.

"These projects reflect your dedication to fulfilling promises. They will empower and uplift our women, while the improved roads will enhance connectivity and boost trade. Homa Bay is rich with countless opportunities," she stated.

Emphasizing the event’s theme, "Harnessing Kenya’s Blue Economy for Sustainable Growth", Governor Wanga pointed out Homa Bay’s strategic location along the shores of Lake Victoria, noting that the region is well-positioned to become a center for fisheries, aquaculture, transport, and tourism.

"As the stadium fills with cheers today, we honor and celebrate our heroes the pioneers who fought for self-rule and those who continue to safeguard our constitutional achievements," she said.

Wanga, the county’s first female governor, also highlighted Homa Bay’s unique status as the only county with a third of its elected leaders being women.

She expressed gratitude to the president for appointing sons of Homa Bay to key positions at the national level.

The governor described hosting the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations as a historic milestone in Kenya’s devolution journey, emphasizing it as a strong symbol of unity, collaboration, and the vast potential of the Blue Economy.

"For the first time, we are hosting this event. The people of Homa Bay, who have previously only watched the national celebrations on television, are now able to experience them in person," she remarked.

During her speech at the official opening of the new Homa Bay Stadium, Governor Wanga praised the national government’s investments in the region, highlighting the 12,000-seat stadium, the ongoing construction of a dual carriageway connecting Homa Bay to major towns, the expansion of Kabunde Airstrip, and upgrades to key roads within Homa Bay Town.

"These projects demonstrate your dedication to fulfilling promises. They will empower and uplift our women, while the improved roads will open up the county and boost trade. Homa Bay is truly rich with opportunities," she added.

Governor Wanga emphasized Homa Bay’s strategic location along the shores of Lake Victoria, noting that the area is well-positioned to develop into a center for fisheries, aquaculture, transportation, and tourism.

"This occasion truly exemplifies the blessings of devolution. It cements Homa Bay’s role in Kenya’s development story and honors the rich culture, resilience, and vast untapped potential of the Luo Nyanza region," she affirmed.
