Setback for MP Salasya as court rejects torture claims

Presiding Principal Magistrate Peter Mutai stated that the court does not have the authority to release the exhibits at this point, emphasizing the need to adhere to proper legal procedures.
The Milimani Magistrate Court has rejected allegations made by Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, who claimed he was tortured while detained by police.
Presiding Principal Magistrate Peter Mutai stated that the court does not have the authority to release the exhibits at this point, emphasizing the need to adhere to proper legal procedures.
Salasya, charged with hate speech on May 19, 2025, was granted release on a cash bail of Ksh. 200,000.
The court has scheduled the case to proceed to a pre-trial hearing on June 16, 2025.
“I find that this court currently lacks jurisdiction to directly release the exhibits until they are formally presented. However, the accused is entitled to protection by the State and must be provided security in line with established procedures,” stated Principal Magistrate Peter Mutai.
Salahya was dramatically arrested in May while touring Isiolo and later taken into custody in Nairobi.
He alleged that men claiming to be officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) attacked his convoy, fired shots, and detained him.
On his official X account, Salasya described how about 15 masked, heavily armed men wielding AK-47 rifles intercepted his convoy on the highway following his tour in Isiolo.
The assailants reportedly fired shots, punctured his vehicle’s tires, and disarmed his security detail.
