IPOA probes police shooting that left three dead in Narok

The probe as highlighted by IPOA boss Issack Hassan, is being conducted under a legal mandate that allows the Authority to investigate deaths and serious injuries caused by police.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has begun investigating a police shooting in Lolkuruk Village, Angama Mara, that left at least three people dead and seven others seriously injured.
The incident happened on Thursday, 5 June 2025, after police reportedly opened fire on a group of people said to have invaded private land within the Angama Conservancy in Narok County.
The clash occurred in the Transmara area, Kilgoris Constituency.
According to IPOA, a Rapid Response Team was deployed early Friday to begin gathering information on the shooting.
The probe as highlighted by IPOA boss Issack Hassan, is being conducted under a legal mandate that allows the Authority to investigate deaths and serious injuries caused by police.
"In line with the provisions of Section 7(1)(a)(x) of the IPOA Act, CAP 86 of the Laws of Kenya which mandates the investigation of deaths and serious injuries resulting from police actions, the dispatched team has been instructed to gather all information relevant to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident," the statement said.
The seven injured people were taken to hospitals in the area, including Lolgorian Subcounty Hospital, where they are being treated for gunshot wounds.
IPOA has asked the community to remain calm and allow investigations to continue without interference.
"The Authority extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and to those who were injured. It also appeals to local residents to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course," stated IPOA.
The Authority has promised to give updates once the investigations are complete and to share its recommendations with other state agencies.
"IPOA will make appropriate recommendations to the relevant State agencies and will update the public on its findings upon the conclusion of its investigations," it said.
IPOA concluded by saying it remains committed to a fair process over the matter.
"IPOA commits to remain independent, impartial, fair and apolitical in all its investigations,” the authority said.
