Turkana leaders demand action over Ethiopian militia killings

Leaders from Turkana have strongly denounced the killing of four residents, allegedly by armed Ethiopian militia, and are calling on the national government to act swiftly to safeguard citizens living near the unstable border region.

The attack has once again brought to the forefront long-standing frustrations over the government’s inability to ensure the safety of communities in border areas.

Senator James Lomenen, Turkana North MP Paul Nabuin, and former Cabinet Secretary John Munyes condemned the recent killings during the funeral of two brothers who lost their lives in the Natira village attack.

The tragic deaths have stirred widespread anger and frustration throughout Turkana County, an area already grappling with ongoing security challenges.

Senator Lomenen also criticized the Ministry of Interior for deploying security personnel with disciplinary issues to Turkana, stressing that the community deserves capable and respectful law enforcement.

"Why are all officers with disciplinary problems assigned to Turkana? What message does that send about our people?," he told the Standard.

His demand for a comprehensive reform of the security system received strong support from those present.

Munyes condemned the attack as a breach of Kenya’s sovereignty, questioning why Kenyan citizens continue to lose their lives on home soil.

He also called out corrupt security officials involved in unlawful practices.

A coalition of professionals from Turkana North stood with local leaders, giving the government a 14-day deadline to implement effective measures to address the rising insecurity.

They proposed repatriating the Daasanach community to Ethiopia as a way to ease tensions and demanded compensation for those affected by cross-border violence, stressing the urgent need for justice and accountability amid the continuing unrest.
