Amnesty Kenya calls for immediate investigation into Albert Ojwang’s death
Amnesty voiced serious worries about the events leading to Ojwang’s death, which happened only hours after police arrested him in Homa Bay County and transferred him to Nairobi for custody.
Amnesty International Kenya has called for a swift, comprehensive, and impartial investigation into the death of Albert Ojwang, a social media influencer and teacher who died while detained at Nairobi’s Central Police Station.
In a statement released on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Amnesty voiced serious worries about the events leading to Ojwang’s death, which happened only hours after police arrested him in Homa Bay County and transferred him to Nairobi for custody.
The human rights group has called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to promptly launch an independent investigation into the case.
They emphasized that the investigation’s results must be made public, and any officers found responsible should face legal consequences.
Amnesty also highlighted that police have a legal and ethical duty to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in their custody.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Albert Ojwang, who passed away last night at Nairobi’s Central Police Station. No Kenyan should die while in police custody, and those charged with protecting them must be held accountable," the statement partly reads.
Amnesty Kenya emphasized that police officers have both a legal and ethical responsibility to safeguard the well-being of everyone in their custody.
The organization called for a swift, thorough, and independent investigation into Albert Ojwang’s death by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).
They insisted that the results of these investigations be made public and that any officers found culpable be held fully accountable under the law.
Amnesty further highlighted that this tragic case underscores the urgent need for greater transparency, accountability, and comprehensive reforms within Kenya’s law enforcement agencies.
"The findings of these investigations must be made public, and any officers found responsible must be held fully accountable according to the law. This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the critical need for transparency, accountability, and sweeping reforms within our law enforcement institutions," the statement reads in part.
