IPOA at the same time also confirmed that six officers were involved in Ojwang’s arrest in Homa Bay on June 7, 2025.

Preliminary investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) into the death of blogger Albert Ojwang have revealed that the CCTV camera system at Central Police Station in Nairobi was interfered with.

IPOA at the same time also confirmed that six officers were involved in Ojwang’s arrest in Homa Bay on June 7, 2025.

IPOA Vice Chairperson Anne Wanjiku told senators on Wednesday, June 11, that the officers—Sergeant Sigei, Sergeant Wesley, Kipkorir Kirui, and Police Constables Dennis Kinyani, Milton Mwanze, and Boniface Rabudo picked up Ojwang from Leaders Centre in Homa Bay at around 2:30 pm.

"The team arrested the deceased and took him to Mawego Police Station," she said, adding that he was later booked out and transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi.

Ojwang, a teacher and digital content creator, died while in custody.

A post-mortem conducted on June 10 showed that he had suffered blunt force trauma to the head, neck compression, and multiple bruises across his body.

"This, honorable speaker, the autopsy report and our preliminary investigation rule out the theory of suicide," Wanjiku said.

The IPOA Vice Chairperson said the investigation began after Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat filed a complaint on June 4.

He claimed he had been targeted by false and malicious posts on X, formerly Twitter, by a user identified as Pixel Pioneer.

The police first arrested Kevin Muinde on June 5 in Borabu, Nyamira County. During questioning, Ojwang was identified as a person of interest, leading to his arrest two days later.

Wanjiku told the Senate that IPOA has already gathered documents from the Central Police Station and seized CCTV footage, which has been sent for forensic analysis.

She added that statements had been obtained from all six officers involved, potential witnesses, and one detainee who was held at the same station.

However, she informed the House that the CCTV systems located at the Officer Commanding Station’s office had been interfered with, raising further questions about what transpired during Ojwang’s detention.

Samples taken from Ojwang’s body are still under analysis, and IPOA is waiting for a response from Mbagathi Hospital on whether he received treatment there.

In her closing remarks, Wanjiku said IPOA intends to collect more statements from police officers at Central Police Station and from Ojwang’s family.

The findings will be compiled into a full report.
