In Summary

Medical staff who examined him found no signs of life and described his body as cold with extensive injuries that pointed to a violent assault.

Albert Ojwang was already dead, cold, and severely bruised when he was taken to Mbagathi Hospital from Nairobi’s Central Police Station, a hospital report has revealed, raising serious questions about the official police version of events.

According to the hospital’s incident report, Ojwang was brought in at 2 am.

Medical staff who examined him found no signs of life and described his body as cold with extensive injuries that pointed to a violent assault.

“The male patient was unresponsive, had no spontaneous breathing, and his entire body was cold,” reads the report by the medical officer on duty, seen by Citizen TV.

“His face was swollen. There were multiple bruises on the body and limbs. Blood was oozing from the head, mouth, and eyes. The parieto-occipital region at the back of the head had a cut. There was no cardiac activity.”

The report concluded that Ojwang was “brought in dead.”

Nurses who were on duty at the time confirmed that there were no vital signs.

The hospital immediately filled out the Patient Brought In Dead Notification of Death form and instructed the police officers present to proceed to the Kenyatta National Hospital Police Post and later to the City Mortuary.

The place of death on the Notification of Death form was listed as Central Police Station, further contradicting police claims that Ojwang was found unresponsive in a cell and rushed to hospital for treatment.

Police had earlier reported that Ojwang injured himself by hitting his head on the wall, but this version has been challenged by both the hospital findings and a postmortem that pointed to serious trauma.

Ojwang, a blogger and teacher, was arrested in Homa Bay County over a social media post and later transferred to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where he died a few hours later.

Following investigations, one officer has been arrested and is expected to face murder charges.

“Please be informed that PC James Mukhwana of Central Police Station, Nairobi, was arrested today, 12/06/2025 and placed in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station by officers from IAU and IPOA," reads a police report.

"He is to be charged with the offence of murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the Penal Code following the death of one Albert Ojwang," reads a police report.

The Internal Affairs Unit and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority are now leading the investigation.
