In Summary

Kindiki said there must be personal accountability over the controversial death of Ojwang, who died while in police custody.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has strongly condemned the killing of Albert Ojwang and warned against the politicisation of the case, assuring the public that justice will be pursued through due process.

Speaking during an empowerment event for micro and small-scale traders and Saccos at Kasikeu Secondary School in Kilome Constituency, Kindiki said there must be personal accountability over the controversial death of Ojwang, who died while in police custody.

The incident has triggered outrage, especially in Nairobi, where protests have erupted demanding answers from authorities.

"There must be individual accountability, personal responsibility for the person who was involved in the killing of the slain teacher," Kindiki asserted.

"If there is anyone who was involved in any way, if there was anyone who sent or ordered the killers to commit the crime, whoever they are, they must face the law."

Ojwang’s death has raised serious concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officers and the circumstances surrounding his final hours.

The teacher died under unclear circumstances while in police custody, sparking widespread anger and calls for a transparent investigation.

Demonstrations have been held in Nairobi, with citizens demanding full disclosure on what led to his death.

In his remarks, Kindiki emphasised that the investigation would be thorough and objective.

He warned both the public and political leaders against turning the matter into a political platform, saying justice should not be influenced by partisan interests.

"We cannot allow this country to degenerate into lawlessness. The government does not entertain extrajudicial killings or any form of torture," the Deputy President stated, adding, "The killer must be brought to book."

In response to growing public concern, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that investigations into Ojwang’s death were underway.

He said the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had been tasked to lead the probe, particularly into allegations of tampering with CCTV footage at the Central Police Station, where Ojwang was last seen alive.

"Let us give IPOA an opportunity to conduct quick investigations so that we can know what happened," Kanja said, reaffirming that authorities were committed to uncovering the truth behind the incident.

Ojwang’s sudden death has shocked the public and intensified demands for transparency from the government. The protests in Nairobi and calls for justice have placed pressure on authorities to act swiftly and conclusively in the ongoing investigations.
