Sifuna announced that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties had collapsed in light of the death of Albert Ojwang.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has declared that the political understanding between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is no longer valid.

Addressing a gathering in Mumias on Saturday, June 14, 2025, Sifuna announced that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties had collapsed in light of the death of Albert Ojwang.

Ojwang died while in custody, just hours after being arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

According to Sifuna, the incident marked a breaking point that rendered the ODM–UDA pact null and void.

“If you ask me, as Sifuna, that MoU between the Orange Democratic Movement and UDA holds no weight as of today,” he asserted.

Sifuna argued that the spirit of the agreement was broken the moment young people across the country began dying under unclear and suspicious circumstances.

“We had an understanding that young people would not be killed,” Sifuna said.

“Yet a young man is taken from his home and ends up dead in a police cell. Just recently, two youths from Elgeyo Marakwet were found battered and dumped in Nakuru, and another incident occurred at Katitu Police Station. That’s why I’m saying the MoU is meaningless now.”

He went on to stress that no political maneuvering could salvage the agreement.

“It doesn’t matter what else President Ruto does that deal is dead. The only way to revive it would be to bring Albert Ojwang and the other victims back to life,” Sifuna added.

President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga had signed the political cooperation agreement on March 7, 2025, after weeks of national dialogue and consultations.

Prior to the signing of the agreement, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and his UDA counterpart Hassan Omar outlined the key issues the pact was designed to address.

At the top of the list was the full implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, which recommended significant national reforms.

The opposition had consistently pushed for the government to adopt the report, arguing that it would resolve nearly 90 percent of the challenges facing ordinary Kenyans.

The report itself was a product of nationwide protests following the disputed 2022 general election, where Raila Odinga alleged electoral malpractice.

The agreement came after mediation efforts led by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who played a key role in bringing President Ruto and Raila to the negotiation table.
