Colombian Senator Uribe in critical condition following brain surgery after shooting

After undergoing a second surgical procedure related to his initial treatment, Turbay remains in critical condition.
Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay remains in extremely critical condition following a surgical procedure to address a brain hemorrhage, more than a week after he was shot in the head during a political rally.
The incident, which has fueled growing concerns over a resurgence of political violence in the country, comes amid a wave of unrest that is drawing comparisons to Colombia’s turbulent era marked by assassinations and bomb attacks.
After undergoing a second surgical procedure related to his initial treatment, Turbay remains in critical condition.
Doctors confirmed the urgent neurological intervention was prompted by scans revealing an acute brain bleed, with persistent swelling and bleeding complicating recovery efforts.
Uribe, a 39-year-old opposition figure and potential presidential contender, was shot twice in the head on June 7 during a campaign event in Bogotá.
The assassination attempt, captured on video, has stirred national anxiety, evoking memories of Colombia’s violent political past marked by assassinations and armed conflict in the 1980s and 1990s.
Authorities have arrested three suspects in connection with the attack, including a 15-year-old boy believed to be a paid hitman.
The teen has been charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm, charges to which he pleaded not guilty.
Two other adults a man and a woman are also in custody as investigations continue.
