The Police Reforms Working Group has issued a strong condemnation of the violent infiltration of peaceful protests in Nairobi on Tuesday.

The group said Hundreds of violent agitators attacked protesters, resulting in one unarmed bystander killed, twenty-five people injured, and five hospitalized.

“Gunshot wounds were reported by 9 p.m., with significant damage to private businesses and public property across the capital.”

The group reiterated its public safety advisory from June 17, urging the National Police Service to enhance security and prepare for demonstrations.

The statement criticized the police for failing to stop hundreds of masked agitators who mobilized, transported, and deployed patrol vehicles and attacked Government critics with tire whips and large wooden batons.

The report highlighted a lack of police presence in the streets, with social media analysis revealing police were absent for more than six hours.

Protests were observed in areas like Railways Club, Kenyatta Avenue, and Moi Avenue, where groups publicly expressed appreciation for the Nairobi Governor's support.

However, the statement noted elected Members of the County Assembly's "taking note of the goons" and "investigations have commenced" post-violence visits to Central Police Station and Kamukunji Police Station, with no protest-related arrests reported by 8 p.m. last night.

The Inspector General of Police has been called upon to submit the deployment schedule, weapons, ballistics, and forensic evidence to the Independent Policing

Oversight Authority.

The group has demanded that Boniface Kanuki be charged and prosecuted in court, with a fair trial to follow.

The statement also called on Nairobi Governor Johnstone Sakaja, County Assembly members, and other politicians to refrain from interfering in policing decisions or exerting political pressure on demonstrations.

It urged public disassociation and prosecution of those involved in the violence in Nairobi's Central Business District.

It urged the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to address police misconduct during public protests, with urgent action needed to restore accountability.

The group emphasized the deepening crisis of public and investor confidence due to continued violence threatening Kenya's lives, democratic stability, and economic resilience.

Legal advocates, journalists, protest observers, and members of the public who upheld non-violence cared for the injured, documented abuses, and called for an end to the anarchic chaos that has been witnessed.
