In Summary

Opposition leaders including Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka have declared June 25 a day of remembrance for Gen Z protesters killed last year, urging Kenyans to boycott work and observe what they call a symbolic holiday.

Boda boda riders have firmly refused to take part in the upcoming June 25 protests, saying they will not risk their lives, businesses, or tools of trade for political agendas that offer no return.

Through a strongly-worded statement issued on Friday, the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya said its members will keep off the planned demonstrations meant to mark one year since the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests that left scores injured and several dead.

They warned that past protests have brought nothing but pain to riders, with some losing bikes, others getting caught in clashes, and many returning home empty-handed.

“We have seen the threats of chaos. We've heard the calls for protests and riots on June 25, 2025. But we say this clearly: We are not part of that destruction. We are not tools for political games. We are hustlers – and we ride for peace, dignity, and survival,” the association said.

Opposition leaders including Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka have declared June 25 a day of remembrance for Gen Z protesters killed last year, urging Kenyans to boycott work and observe what they call a symbolic holiday.

But the riders believe taking to the streets will only open the door to more losses and instability, especially for those struggling to make ends meet.

“One day of riots is one day of hunger in our homes. When roads are blocked, we don’t earn. When shops close, customers disappear,” they stated.

The group, which represents thousands of riders, stressed their crucial role in the economy, from ferrying workers and schoolchildren to responding in emergencies and supporting families.

They described any disruption as a direct attack on their ability to survive.

“When police clash with rioters, it's our bikes that get burned and our people that get caught in the crossfire,” the statement added.

While acknowledging the right to protest under Article 37 of the constitution, the riders said violence erases the very freedoms people claim to defend.

“No stone, no fire, no looting. Because once violence starts, the constitution walks away. And so do we,” they said.

The association appealed to authorities to ensure their safety, protect their motorcycles, and maintain order during the planned protest day.

“We are not looking for favours – just fairness,” they said.

“To those planning to disrupt our routes and risk our safety: You don’t speak for us. You don’t care about our pain. Don’t hide your chaos behind our helmets.”

They concluded by reaffirming their commitment to work, peace, and the well-being of their families.

“We have built a name in this country by helping in emergencies, supporting families, and moving the economy. Let Nairobi move. Let Kenyans work. Let the hustle continue.”
