The Department of Mining of the Turkana County government launched a new initiative to empower artisanal miners with modern tools and safety gear.

The program aims to boost productivity, enhance safety, and promote sustainable practices.

It targets 10 registered cooperatives, groups, and individual miners, providing them with 450 metallic pans, 17 generators, 8 demolition hammers, 120 headlamp torches, and 5,000-liter water tanks.

The first batch of equipment was distributed at the department’s headquarters in Lodwar, led by Dr. Anthony Apalia, County Executive Committee Member for Natural Resources, Mining, Energy, and Climate Change.

Dr. Anthony Apalia emphasized the initiative’s role in strengthening the artisanal mining sector.

“Our miners drive the local economy. Equipping them with proper tools ensures safer working conditions and more sustainable practices,” he said.

Chief Officer for Mining Triza Amoni highlighted the county’s commitment to economic empowerment.

“This equipment will replace outdated tools, making mining more efficient and less strenuous while supporting our communities,” Amoni noted.

Mary Lokwale, a miner from Lolupe and one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude.

“The generator and headlamp will make early morning work much safer and easier. We feel valued by this support,” she said.

The handover was attended by the Director of Mining, Merimug Eloto Nickson, Deputy Director Elim Areman, Mining Officer Niclam Eregae, and county administration officials.

The initiative is part of the county’s broader strategy to formalize artisanal mining and foster a safer, more productive, and environmentally responsible sector.
