Koome said the attack had not only caused extensive damage to the structure but also destroyed crucial case files, disrupting ongoing proceedings and denying justice to many.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has condemned the torching of Kikuyu Law Courts during the Gen Z anniversary protests, describing the incident as an act of terrorism aimed at weakening Kenya’s justice system.

Speaking during a visit to the site on Thursday, she said the attack had not only caused extensive damage to the structure but also destroyed crucial case files, disrupting ongoing proceedings and denying justice to many.

“The damages go beyond the physical building. The destruction of case files has thrown dozens of proceedings into uncertainty,” Koome said, adding that the lack of digital backups means court staff must now reconstruct records manually. The Judiciary has suspended all operations at the court indefinitely and is working to restore services.

“Our worry is what will happen to the justice seekers who come here every day. Such actions not only cripple access to justice but also embolden lawlessness,” she said.

She confirmed that all 23 judicial officers assigned to the court were safe.

Koome acknowledged the public’s right to protest but said the demonstrations had been hijacked by criminal elements.

“I believe the majority of Kenyans who came out to demonstrate did so in good faith but were met with other elements who took advantage,” she said.

She called on both government and citizens to separate peaceful protest from criminal destruction and work together toward long-term solutions.

“This is a country where we are all required to find solutions. The Judiciary remains committed to delivering justice, even in the face of such destruction,” she said.

Koome also revealed that the Kikuyu Law Courts were not the only ones targeted.

The newly established Dagoretti Law Courts were vandalised, while the old Ol Kalou court building, currently used to store exhibits, was broken into and damaged.

“These attacks are an affront to the Constitution and the rule of law. They severely compromise our ability to deliver justice, especially for the vulnerable,” she said. “To target courts is to erode the very foundation of our democratic and legal order.”

She noted that developing court infrastructure in Kenya requires years of planning and heavy investment, and warned that the destruction would delay access to justice for many communities.

However, she assured court users that efforts to resume services were already underway, with the safety of Judiciary staff being a top priority.

“I commend our Judiciary staff who continue to serve under difficult circumstances. Your commitment to the rule of law and service to the people of Kenya is invaluable,” Koome said.

She also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the protests and wished a quick recovery to those injured.

“The right to assemble must be exercised peaceably and without arms. It does not extend to acts that cause harm or destroy property,” she said.
