TikTok cop Afande Denno speaks out after Nairobi protest interrogation

Denno recounted how a group of men, identifying themselves as officers from Pangani Police Station, approached and requested him to accompany them for questioning.
Dennis Munyao, a police officer popularly known as Afande Denno, has spoken publicly for the first time since he was questioned by authorities over his involvement in the anti-government protests held in Nairobi on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
In an interview aired on Saturday night June 28 with The Standard, Denno recounted how a group of men, identifying themselves as officers from Pangani Police Station, approached and requested him to accompany them for questioning.
“They asked to speak with me, and then we drove towards the DCI headquarters,” he said.
The officer, who is stationed in Dadaab’s Dagahare area of Garissa County and is well known for his viral TikTok videos, said the interrogation lasted about 45 minutes. He described the experience as respectful and professional.
“I felt comfortable. They handled me well during the statement process,” he explained, adding that he clearly stated the timeline of his participation in the demonstrations. “I joined the protests around midday and left at 5:30 pm. There’s video evidence of my presence.”
Denno also revealed that he is expected to return to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further examination of his mobile phone.
Despite the scrutiny, Denno defended his decision to join the protests, framing it as an act of solidarity and community engagement. He urged fellow officers to immerse themselves in the lived experiences of the public, saying such interactions are vital for understanding the needs and frustrations of ordinary citizens.
He also reiterated his belief in community policing, arguing that building rapport between police officers and the public is essential. “My approach is about bridging the gap making the police feel approachable and part of the community,” he said.
This is not the first time Afande Denno has attracted attention online. In April 2024, he came under fire after posting a video mocking individual who were attempting to report a battery case. The video, which captured him laughing and ridiculing their accent, sparked backlash for its insensitivity.
However, a broader look at his TikTok content where he commands a following of over 270,000 shows a different side of the officer. His feed features clips of him assisting civilians, interacting with fans, dancing, cracking jokes with colleagues, and conducting night patrols.
