In Summary

KAA advised travellers heading to JKIA to consider using the Outer Ring Road via Ruai or Thika Road, depending on their direction. For Wilson Airport, alternative feeder roads along Lang’ata Road and Mombasa Road were recommended.

Travellers flying through Nairobi this weekend have been asked to plan their journeys in advance due to major road closures that could affect access to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) issued a public alert on Saturday, July 5, warning that the road closures could lead to traffic congestion and possible flight disruptions for those who fail to make early arrangements.

In its statement, KAA said several major roads will be closed starting from 10pm on Saturday, July 5, until Sunday afternoon, July 6, to pave way for the Nairobi City Marathon.

“Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) wishes to inform all passengers and airport users that due to the Nairobi City Marathon scheduled for Sunday, July 6, 2025, several key roads leading to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport will be closed starting from 10:00 PM on Saturday, July 5, until mid-afternoon on Sunday, July 6,” read part of the notice.

The Authority cautioned that the closure would affect traffic flow, especially along key corridors connecting the city to the two airports.

“Passengers are strongly advised to plan their travel early to avoid delays and ensure timely arrival for their flights,” KAA added.

KAA advised travellers heading to JKIA to consider using the Outer Ring Road via Ruai or Thika Road, depending on their direction. For Wilson Airport, alternative feeder roads along Lang’ata Road and Mombasa Road were recommended.

Among the roads expected to be heavily affected is the Nairobi Expressway, which will be closed from James Gichuru to JKIA in both directions starting 10pm Saturday until 3pm on Sunday.

On Waiyaki Way, the inner lanes between Musa Gitau Road and the entrance to the Expressway will be shut from midnight to 10am on Sunday.

Additionally, two lanes on both sides between James Gichuru Road and the Expressway entrance will be closed from midnight to 2pm.

Aerodrome Road near Nyayo Stadium in Upper Hill will be closed from Friday, July 4, at 10pm until Sunday at 6pm.

Other affected sections include access points along Mombasa Road and the Southern Bypass, with roundabouts, exits and town-bound entries closed from midnight Saturday to 11am Sunday.

In Nairobi’s CBD, complete closures will affect Harry Thuku Road, University Way, Koinange Street (between University Way and Kenyatta Avenue), Kenyatta Avenue, Kimathi Street, Simba Street, Mama Ngina Street (between Simba and Kimathi), City Hall Way (from Simba to Parliament Road), Taifa Road, Harambee Avenue (from Taifa to Parliament Road), and Parliament Road (between Harambee Avenue and Haile Selassie Avenue).

These closures will run from midnight on Saturday to 2pm on Sunday.

Several key highway intersections will also be restricted. Notably, crossing points on Mombasa Road and the Southern Bypass via Likoni Road will be inaccessible from midnight to 11am.

Thika Road’s Exit A2, which links to Uhuru Highway towards Mombasa Road, will also be closed from midnight to 2pm on Sunday.

KAA reiterated its appeal for passengers to give themselves extra time when heading to the airports during the affected period, urging them to take into account the diversions and road closures likely to affect normal traffic flow.
