Kenya has taken another major step in cementing its role as a climate leader, following the groundbreaking of the African headquarters of the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA) in Nairobi.

The centre, which will sit alongside GCA’s existing base in Rotterdam, marks the first time the organisation is establishing two equal headquarters.

The launch ceremony took place at the Kenya School of Government, where President William Ruto hailed the development as a significant boost to the country’s climate agenda. The new centre is set to be completed by mid-2027.

Ruto said the decision to set up the centre in Nairobi reflects the country’s growing influence in global climate efforts and comes at a time when Kenya is enhancing its climate resilience strategies.

“The Global Centre on Adaptation will be a hub for adaptation innovation, public service training, and policy support. It will bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and development actors to design and deliver practical, scalable solutions,” said Ruto.

The President noted that the centre will complement Kenya’s National Climate Change Action Plan and play a central role in shaping solutions for the continent and beyond.

“Today, we plant a seed that will grow into a beacon of resilience, innovation, and excellence. Let this centre stand as a symbol of Kenya’s leadership in climate adaptation, and of our collective commitment to a sustainable and secure future for all,” he added.

Kenya’s position as a key player in climate discourse has grown in recent years, with the country hosting the Africa Climate Summit in 2023, which brought together African heads of state and climate experts.

Ruto has also chaired the African Union’s Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), strengthening his voice in global environmental matters.

GCA’s honorary chair Ban-Ki-Moon, who also served as the eighth Secretary General of the United Nations, underscored the importance of establishing the centre in Africa.

“By establishing dual headquarters, GCA demonstrates that true progress rests on shared leadership and mutual responsibility, ensuring that adaptation solutions are crafted by and for those living on the frontlines of climate change,” said Ban-Ki-Moon.

The Nairobi branch will focus on unlocking resources for climate projects, integrating climate resilience into planning processes, and advocating for global action to protect vulnerable communities.

Once completed, the complex near Kabete River will host high-level meetings, training sessions, and other climate-related forums, turning it into a regional and international centre for adaptation work.

Among those who attended the launch were Senegal’s former President Macky Sall, who chairs the GCA board, and Patrick Verkooijen, the Centre’s President and CEO, who also serves as Chancellor at the University of Nairobi.
