Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has lashed out at the Kenyan government over its vote supporting the renewal of a United Nations mandate on LGBTQ+ rights, urging President William Ruto to rescind the decision without delay.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Kaluma criticized the move as a betrayal of Kenya’s deeply held cultural, religious, and moral beliefs.

“Your Excellency President @WilliamsRuto: LGBTQ and related perversions being pushed on developing countries by Western nations are dismantling our societies. Kenya cannot afford to endorse such practices in any form. They are contrary to our faith, harmful to health, and an affront to our traditions,” he wrote.

Kaluma further claimed that nations in the West, which he said initially promoted homosexuality globally, are now retreating from it.

“Even the countries that introduced these ideologies from the U.S. to Europe are now backtracking. They've passed laws addressing the harm posed by these practices,” he argued.

A long-time critic of LGBTQ+ rights, Kaluma appealed to the president to reconsider the country’s stance, insisting that Kenya’s cultural identity must remain intact.

“Kindly revoke this decision. It is indefensible. Our traditions are not up for negotiation,” he said.

He also warned that Parliament would not support any international agreements perceived to promote LGBTQ+ rights in Kenya.

“As long as I serve in Parliament, we will not endorse any treaty that permits homosexuality in this country,” Kaluma vowed.

Kenya was among 29 nations that voted on Monday in favor of extending the mandate of the UN Independent Expert on sexual orientation and gender identity at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The mandate, currently held by South African academic Graeme Reid, aims to document and combat violence and discrimination targeting LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide.

While human rights defenders applauded the vote as a crucial step in defending LGBTQ+ communities, it sparked criticism from several African and conservative-leaning states, including Nigeria and Qatar, which opposed the resolution. Three other countries abstained.

The United States, though previously supportive under the Biden administration, was absent from the vote due to its withdrawal from the Human Rights Council under President Donald Trump, who cited bias against Israel as the reason.

The final tally was 29 votes in favor, 15 against, and three abstentions.
