EACC said its investigations point to irregular procurement, conflict of interest, and questionable payments to companies linked to the former governor’s associates.

Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati on Monday presented himself at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices after being summoned over corruption charges.

Wangamati, who arrived at Integrity Centre around 8 am accompanied by his lawyers, is among several individuals required to face arraignment in connection with alleged misuse of public funds during his tenure.

He is set to be charged alongside 11 others, including family members and associates identified as directors in companies flagged in procurement dealings with the Bungoma County Government.

Those listed include Michael Simiyu Wangamati, Nicholas Wangamati, Edward Barasa Wangamati, and Edward Maaya Makhanu. Others summoned are Sandra Soita Nasambu, Wafula Wakoli Chesititi, Bramwel Mukewe Wafula, Juma Swaleh Juma, Jimmy Wekesa Barasa, Christopher Masika Makokha, and Joseph Wanyonyi Khaemba.

EACC said its investigations point to irregular procurement, conflict of interest, and questionable payments to companies linked to the former governor’s associates.

Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok has also been summoned in a separate matter and faces prosecution over an alleged conflict of interest together with Evans Kipkoech Korir, a director of Chemasus Construction Limited.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) gave consent on August 29, 2025, for charges to proceed against the two governors and other implicated individuals.

The move comes after months of investigations by the Commission into suspected graft cases involving both current and former county chiefs. Two weeks ago, EACC revealed that at least four sitting governors and 11 former governors are under probe for corruption and economic crimes.

“These investigation files have been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), with recommendations to prosecute 82 of the cases. Notably, four of these cases involve current Governors, former County Governors, two former Cabinet Secretaries, a Principal Secretary, and CEOs and MDs of various State Corporations,” Mohamud said.

He added that the Commission is also at an advanced stage of investigating five more sitting governors and 11 former county bosses.

Over the past eight months, EACC has concluded 89 high-profile cases, many of them touching on alleged embezzlement, conflict of interest, money laundering, and possession of unexplained wealth.
