KHRC decries police delay after violent raid at its offices

According to the commission, the group of goons broke through the office perimeter and violently disrupted the event, which was aimed at condemning police abuses against peaceful protestors.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission has condemned the slow police response following a violent incident at its Gitanga Road offices last Sunday.
Unknown attackers forcibly entered the premises during a press conference held by mothers of victims of police brutality, assaulting attendees and stealing electronic devices.
According to the commission, the group of goons broke through the office perimeter and violently disrupted the event, which was aimed at condemning police abuses against peaceful protestors.
The assault was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the commission’s offices, and the footage clearly shows the faces of those responsible.
Despite handing over this footage to law enforcement agencies, KHRC says there has been little progress in identifying or arresting the perpetrators. This inaction contrasts sharply with the swift police operations against individuals involved in property damage during recent protests.
“The police have been active in arresting those who took part in the Saba Saba protests destruction but remain silent on our case,” KHRC stated.
The organisation further described the attackers as “state-sponsored militia” who not only assaulted journalists but also stole laptops and phones during the press conference, an event organized to highlight arbitrary arrests, disappearances, and unlawful killings by police forces.
KHRC has urged the Director of Criminal Investigations to urgently act on the evidence, arrest the suspects, and ensure the stolen items are returned. It also called on the public to assist in identifying the attackers.
The attack, coupled with police silence, has alarmed human rights activists who worry it signals growing threats to defenders and possibly hints at state complicity in targeting civil society.
