In Summary

The road project will be financed through a loan from the China Export-Import (EXIM) Bank, with final financing arrangements set to be concluded soon.

The government has opened the door to Chinese contractors for a large-scale infrastructure project that will see the expansion of the Pangani–Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi road corridor into a four-lane dual carriageway, with the aim of easing congestion and improving connectivity in Nairobi and Kiambu.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), which is implementing the project, announced the invitation through Tender No. KeNHA/2889/2025 and called on eligible Chinese contractors and consortia led by Chinese firms to submit prequalification applications by Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 am East African Time.

The road project will be financed through a loan from the China Export-Import (EXIM) Bank, with final financing arrangements set to be concluded soon.

It will be carried out under FIDIC Silver Book conditions, which guide the design and build process.

KeNHA said the upgrade will involve transforming the current two-lane road into a four-lane dual carriageway, constructing new interchanges and bridges, and installing pedestrian walkways and six footbridges to improve safety.

The expansion will also include key road spurs such as Ridgeways Road, the stretch connecting Kiambu Road to Thika Road, and UN Avenue through Runda.

According to KeNHA, “Upgrading of the entire project road to a four-lane dual carriageway, including pedestrian walkway,s will ensure better service delivery.”

The agency also stated that, “The project will also improve the level of service and safety for road users and enhance accessibility through service roads and non-motorized transport facilities.”

In addition to the main construction works, the project will feature installation of road signage, furniture, bus bays, and traffic control infrastructure.

Several major junctions will also be redesigned to handle increasing vehicle volumes and reduce travel time across the corridor.

The construction period is expected to last 36 months, followed by a 24-month defects notification period.

Interested bidders must meet financial and technical qualifications as well as conform to Chinese government financing protocols, as specified in the tender documents.

All tender documents are available on KeNHA’s official website (www.kenha.co.ke) and on the Public Procurement Information Portal (tenders.go.ke).

Completed applications must be physically delivered to the Director of Development at KeNHA headquarters, Barabara Plaza, along Airport South Road in Nairobi. All submissions must clearly indicate the tender title and number.

KeNHA urged all interested firms to keep checking the KeNHA and PPIP websites for any updates and clarifications before the deadline.

The project is one of several being undertaken by the government to improve infrastructure, reduce urban congestion, and support long-term economic growth by improving transport links between Nairobi and its rapidly growing outskirts.
