Speaker Wetang’ula warns politicians against interfering with IEBC

Wetang’ula said reckless remarks from some politicians threaten to undermine the credibility and legitimacy of the IEBC.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has issued a stern warning to politicians, urging them to stop interfering with the work of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
He cautioned that continued political meddling could derail critical processes, including the long-overdue boundary review, pending by-elections, and the nationwide registration of new voters.
Speaking on Sunday at a function at Kilgoris constituency, Wetang’ula said reckless remarks from some politicians threaten to undermine the credibility and legitimacy of the IEBC.
“We now have a fully constituted IEBC after unnecessary court delays by activists who tried to block its reconstitution. The commissioners have taken their oath and assumed office. Let’s allow them to do their job without political interference,” he declared.
The Speaker stressed that the Commission’s plate is already full: overseeing voter registration, auditing and cleaning the current register to remove deceased voters, and undertaking long-awaited boundary delimitation.
“Though we are behind schedule on boundary review, I believe there’s still time and opportunity to do it properly so that every Kenyan is fairly and equally represented,” he said.
Wetang’ula dismissed expectations of new constituencies being created, pointing out that the country already has 290, but encouraged the IEBC to focus on reviewing electoral ward boundaries to improve service delivery.
“I urge the IEBC to prioritise delimitation of wards. This will help bring government services closer to the people, and it’s achievable. We, as leaders, must support them to deliver,” he said.
The Speaker also called on MPs to back additional funding for the Commission when the supplementary budget comes before Parliament.
“When the National Assembly considers Supplementary Budget I, I appeal to my colleagues to support IEBC so it’s adequately resourced ahead of the next general election. A credible process needs proper funding,” Wetang’ula said.
He delivered these remarks during a church service at Ilchartuiyani Church of God in Central Ward, Kilgoris Constituency.
Speaker Wetang’ula was joined by Kilgoris MP Hon. Julius Sunkuli, Narok County MP Rebecca Tonkei, Busia County MP Catherine Omanyo, and Tourism Principal Secretary Hon. John Ololtuaa.
