National Liberal Party invites applications for by-election nominations

NLP leader Augustus Muli urged qualified party members to submit their nomination applications by September 16, 2025
The National Liberal Party (NLP) has officially invited applications from interested candidates to fill vacant elective seats declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
This follows the IEBC’s announcement on August 9, 2025, of upcoming by-elections slated for November 27, 2025.
In a statement released on August 10, NLP leader Augustus Muli urged qualified party members to submit their nomination applications by September 16, 2025.
“Following Gazette Notice No. 11160 dated August 8, 2025, by the IEBC declaring vacancies across various electoral areas in Kenya, the NLP invites suitably qualified members to apply as party candidates for the forthcoming by-elections,” the statement read.
Eligible nominees must be registered NLP members, possess no criminal record, be registered voters, be of sound mind, and meet the constitutional requirements outlined in Chapter 6 regarding leadership and integrity.
The IEBC, through Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon, confirmed that the by-elections will be held in accordance with the Constitution and the Elections Act.
The first list of vacancies, gazetted on August 8, includes 16 ward seats spanning counties such as Samburu, Nandi, Tana River, Nairobi, Kakamega, Elgeyo Marakwet, and more.
A second batch of vacancies to be published on August 11 covers the Baringo County Senate seat, six National Assembly constituencies—including Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja and the Kabuchai/Chwele ward in Bungoma County.
The IEBC has set September 17 as the deadline for political parties to submit the names of authorized officials and details of primaries conducted. Public officers intending to contest must resign within seven days of the vacancy notice.
Chairperson Ethekon emphasized the importance of adherence to timelines and legal requirements, warning, “The law will be applied firmly and fairly to ensure a credible process. We urge all potential candidates to familiarize themselves with the schedules to avoid disqualification.”
