Maraga says Kenyans have raised over Sh500,000 for his 2027 presidential bid

Maraga says he is determined to overhaul Kenya’s political system, particularly the high-cost barrier that locks out potential leaders without deep pockets.
Former Chief Justice David Maraga claims Kenyans have donated over Sh500,000 within just two days to support his 2027 presidential campaign, a move he describes as a clear sign of public yearning for change.
Maraga, who famously led the Supreme Court in nullifying former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2017 re-election, has launched a fundraising website aimed at mobilizing grassroots support as he prepares to challenge President William Ruto in the next general election.
“I told Kenyans I don’t have money, and I meant it. That’s why I’m appealing directly to the people,” he said.
The retired CJ noted that contributions some coming in U.S. dollars from Kenyans in the diaspora reflect growing discontent with the country's current leadership and a groundswell of support for his presidential ambition.
“When you see Kenyans abroad sending dollars, that tells you there’s real appetite for change,” he observed.
Maraga says he is determined to overhaul Kenya’s political system, particularly the high-cost barrier that locks out potential leaders without deep pockets. He believes electoral reforms are essential to ensure youth, women, and other qualified candidates without financial muscle have a fair shot at elective office.
“If given the chance, I’ll prioritize reforms that open up the political space for capable Kenyans who lack the resources but have leadership potential,” he stated.
He has also launched a scathing attack on President Ruto’s administration, accusing it of undermining constitutionalism and failing to safeguard citizens’ rights.
“The president is terrorizing his own people,” Maraga claimed.
He further criticized Parliament for failing to check the executive, accusing legislators of abandoning their constitutional oversight role.
“Parliament is supposed to act when the president violates the constitution. They should be talking about impeachment, but they’ve been completely captured,” he added.
