In Summary

KURA announced that the closure will remain in effect until Friday, January 30, 2026.

A major section of Links Road in Nyali, Mombasa, will be closed for six months starting Friday, August 1, 2025, as the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) moves to address persistent flooding and drainage issues that have affected the area for years.

KURA announced that the closure will remain in effect until Friday, January 30, 2026.

The roadworks are part of a broader effort to improve urban infrastructure and make roads safer and more accessible, especially during the rainy seasons when drainage problems in the area often lead to severe traffic disruptions and property damage.

In a public notice on Tuesday, the agency advised motorists to take extra caution when navigating the area during the construction period.

“We urge motorists to exercise caution when approaching the affected section and to follow all traffic signs and directions,” the statement read.

To ease congestion and maintain order during the closure, KURA confirmed that traffic marshals and police officers will be stationed at key points to guide drivers and keep traffic moving.

A detailed traffic management plan has also been rolled out to help road users find suitable alternative routes.

The agency apologised for any inconvenience the project may cause and assured the public of its long-term benefits. “We are committed to transforming urban mobility through sustainable and efficient road networks,” KURA said in the statement.

The Links Road project is one of several initiatives being carried out by KURA, a government agency tasked with managing, developing, rehabilitating, and maintaining roads in urban areas.

The agency is not responsible for national highways, but focuses instead on improving infrastructure within towns and cities.

Currently, KURA manages an urban road network of around 4,625 kilometers, including both tarmacked and unpaved sections.

Its role in shaping road systems in urban areas has made it central to improving mobility, easing urban congestion, and enhancing the quality of life in various municipalities.

With its mandate extending across the country’s urban centers, KURA plays a vital part in planning and delivering transport systems that support social and economic development.
