There was a dramatic turn of events at the Milimani High Court after John Matara, the main suspect in the murder of socialite Starlet Wahu, disrupted court proceedings with serious allegations against prison officers.

Matara, who appeared in court in handcuffs, interrupted the session to accuse the officers of demanding bribes from his family within the basement cells of the Milimani Law Courts.

He further claimed that he was denied the removal of his handcuffs because his family had not complied with the alleged demands.

“Is it right for the proceedings to continue when I’m still in handcuffs?” Matara asked aloud, drawing the attention of presiding judge, Justice Alexander Muteti.

He went on to allege that the officers had threatened and intimidated him earlier, which he said explained why he remained restrained in court.

“Your Honour, I have been threatened. These rogue officers refused to uncuff me because my family hasn't paid them,” Matara claimed.

Justice Muteti, visibly taken aback, questioned Matara’s use of the term “rogue,” prompting the suspect to explain that he referred to the officers as such because of the alleged extortion.

When asked how much money had been demanded, Matara vaguely replied that the officers had records on their phones and would only allow him to see them under certain conditions in the holding cells.

The judge then asked if these claims had been shared with his legal team.

Matara responded that he had only come to the realization that day and had not yet informed his lawyers.

He reiterated that the refusal to remove his handcuffs stemmed from the officers’ demands.

In response, Justice Muteti ordered the immediate removal of Matara’s handcuffs. Once unshackled, the suspect assured the court he was ready to proceed with the hearing.

Turning to the defense, the judge addressed Matara’s legal counsel, led by lawyer Samuel Ayora. “Your client has made serious claims that touch on fundamental rights. I advise you to engage him and consider filing a formal complaint,” said Justice Muteti.

The matter continues to draw public interest, not only due to the nature of the charges but now also because of the suspect’s dramatic courtroom allegations.
