Major roads to be closed in Nairobi ahead of CHAN kick-off

Authorities have urged all road users to cooperate with traffic police, follow the diversions, and plan their travel early to avoid delays.
Motorists in Nairobi have been warned to expect major traffic disruptions this Sunday, August 3, 2025, as police implement road closures and diversions for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
In a traffic advisory issued on Thursday, Nairobi Traffic Commandant Joseph Chirchir said the closures are necessary to ensure smooth movement of teams, fans, and officials, and to tighten security around the match venues.
According to the statement, several major roads will either be fully closed or partially restricted:
-
Aerodrome Road – Full closure from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
-
Lang’ata Road – One side closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Lusaka Roundabout.
-
Mombasa Road – One side closed from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
To help ease traffic flow, police have provided alternative routes for motorists:
-
For those using Mombasa Road to the CBD, divert through Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or use the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.
-
For vehicles on Lang’ata Road heading to the CBD, reroute through Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout.
-
Travelers from the CBD heading to Thika, Ruiru, Juja, and Thika Road are advised to use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.
-
Matatus ferrying fans to Kasarani Stadium should follow Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road, proceed to Ngomongo Road, and head to Ngomongo Roundabout.
-
Thika Road-bound motorists can also use Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road as alternatives.
Authorities have urged all road users to cooperate with traffic police, follow the diversions, and plan their travel early to avoid delays.
The CHAN tournament, which will bring together teams from across the continent, is expected to attract thousands of fans, with Nairobi set to host several key matches.
