The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has issued a travel advisory for passengers using Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport, warning of significant traffic disruptions in Nairobi linked to a major African Nations Championship (CHAN) football match scheduled in the capital.

In a public statement released on Sunday, August 3, the authority said Nairobi will experience partial and full road closures as part of security and logistical preparations for the continental tournament.

The closures are aimed at facilitating smooth movement of participating teams, officials, and fans while ensuring public safety around the match venue.

“Traffic disruptions are expected across key routes, which may affect travel times to and from JKIA and Wilson Airport,” the statement read in part.

KAA outlined several affected routes and proposed alternative options for motorists. Aerodrome Road will be completely closed between the Madaraka and Bunyala roundabouts.

Commuters heading to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) from Mombasa Road are encouraged to use Likoni-Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass to ease congestion.

Lang’ata Road will be partially closed on one side, also between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts, with motorists urged to divert via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road.

A section of Mombasa Road will also be closed on one side, stretching from Lusaka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout. For those traveling from the CBD to Thika Road, Juja, Ruiru, or Thika town, alternative routes include Limuru Road and Kiambu Road.

Similarly, drivers approaching Nairobi from Thika Road have been directed to use the Eastern Bypass, Limuru Road, or Kiambu Road.

KAA has advised all airport-bound passengers to monitor their flight schedules closely, allow additional time for travel, and prepare for possible delays.

“Should you need assistance or further information, please contact JKIA Customer Service at +254 20 661 1000 or +254 20 661 2000, or email us at customercare@kaa.go.ke,” the authority added.

The month-long CHAN tournament officially kicked off on August 2 and will run until August 30.

Kenya’s national team, Harambee Stars, is set to open their campaign against two-time champions DR Congo on Sunday, August 3, at 3:00 p.m.

The match will be played at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Nairobi.

Later in the evening, Morocco also two-times titleholders will take on Angola in their first match of the tournament. That game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Nyayo Stadium.

The CHAN final is slated for August 30 and will be held at Kasarani Stadium, with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.
